10 Free Things To Do In Sydney

We get it, the cost of living is hitting hard, and Sydney isn’t known for being the cheapest city in the world. But what if we told you that you can have a great time here without breaking the bank. Interested? You’re in for a treat. Sydney is home to countless free and low-cost experiences; you just need to know where to look. That’s where we come in. We’ve rounded up the top things to do in Sydney that won’t cost you a single cent.

1. Catch the fireworks

Staying at Aiden Darling Harbour means Sydney’s most famous harbourside precinct, Darling Harbour, is right on your doorstep. Home to some of Sydney’s best attractions alongside al fresco cafes and restaurants, it makes for a great walk along the water or a lovely spot to sit and soak it all in. You might even spot some hidden gems like the odd busker or K-Pop dance group.

The area comes to life throughout the year with free performances and activities. Staying with us during Vivid Sydney? You’ll be treated to stunning light and art installations. Here for Lunar New Year? Expect dragon boating and, potentially, a lion dancer with a jet pack. And if you’re visiting on a Saturday night, don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display. Check the Darling Harbour website for show times.

2. Walk across the harbour bridge

Whether it’s your first time in Sydney or your 50th, there’s something truly special about seeing the Sydney Harbour Bridge in all its glory. While climbing it can set you back hundreds of dollars, walking across is completely free.

Start at the southern end on Cumberland Street in The Rocks and follow the pedestrian path along. You’ll score amazing views and photos of the Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay, and the city skyline, all at your own pace. You’ll finish up at Milsons Point, where you can walk back across, hop on a ferry or jump on a train back into the city.

3. See a festival at Tumbalong Park

Tumbalong Park by Darling Quarter is the scene of fun festivals and events year-round, many of which are free and open to the public. This outdoor venue plays host to countless celebrations, from Holi Festival and Buddha’s Birthday to Football Fan Fests, Latin nights, and more. Expect a vibrant mix of cultures, communities, and fandoms coming together with stalls, live performances, art installations, and even film screenings.

Whether you’re looking to connect with different cultures, dance the night away, or simply sit on the grass and take it all in, check out what’s on during your stay.

4. Go on a coastal walk

Sydney is blessed with so many beautiful coastal walks that you could go nearly every weekend and never run out of options. The tracks wind through scenery so stunning it’s easy to forget you’re still so close to the city. Some of the most famous include the Bondi to Coogee walk (6km) in the Eastern Suburbs and the Spit Bridge to Manly walk (10km) along the harbour.

If you’re looking for something closer to Aiden Darling Harbour, Glebe Foreshore Walk from Bicentennial Park to the Sydney Fish Market at Pyrmont is a relatively easy 4.8km with sweeping views of Rozelle Bay and Blackwattle Bay. You might even catch rowers and kayaks out on the water. Pro tip: go at sunset for extra gorgeous views.

5. Swim at Barangaroo Reserve

Barangaroo Reserve is one of the finest waterfront parks on the harbour, home to 75,000 native trees and shrubs, rolling lawns, and significant public artworks. It’s a perfect spot for relaxing, a picnic, or a leisurely wander. Pack your swimwear too and follow the path along to Marrinawi Cove, a stunning swimming spot during the warmer months.

Pro tip: download the free Barangaroo Ngangamay app to engage with the artwork telling the story of Barangaroo herself, the Eora First Nations woman the precinct is named after.

If you’re looking to get outdoors, the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is the place to go. Not only does it offer some of the best views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, it’s home to more than 27,000 plants, 15 themed gardens, and one of the largest green walls in the Southern Hemisphere. Wander through the 30 hectares, soak up the sun, or pack a picnic and find a spot along the foreshore. Want to level up your visit? The garden regularly runs guided walking tours led by knowledgeable volunteers, available by donation.

7. Get Cultured

If you love the arts or are after an indoor activity, you’re in luck as most of Sydney’s galleries and museums are free. The Art Gallery of NSW, located in The Domain, offers free access to its permanent galleries and most exhibitions year-round, showcasing the best of Australian and international art.

Or head to Chippendale where you’ll find the White Rabbit Gallery, which opened in 2009 with a mission to showcase one of the world’s most significant collections of contemporary Chinese art, all with free admission.

More of a museum person? The Museum of Sydney, the Australian Museum, and the Justice and Police Museum all offer free entry to their permanent exhibitions, covering everything from science and nature to Australian and international history. Or venture across the road on a seafaring adventure without leaving dry land, immersing yourself in the nautical offerings of Sydney’s iconic Australian National Maritime Museum

8. Window Shop at The Markets

Sydney loves a good market, and you’ll find one in almost every suburb on any given weekend. It’s a way of life here. Close to Aiden Darling Harbour, The Rocks Market runs every weekend, offering locally designed fashion and jewellery, unique art and homewares, gourmet street food, and handmade sweets. The Rocks itself is well worth a wander too, often described as Sydney’s living museum with its rich colonial history and heritage architecture.

Also worth adding to your radar are the Glebe Markets, held every Saturday at Glebe Public School, known for vintage clothing, locally made goods, jewellery, live music, and food. And if you love a rummage, Rozelle Collectors Markets, also on Saturdays, specialises in secondhand, bric-a-brac, and antique goods.

9. Discover public art

We know Melbourne gets all the cred when it comes to street art, but don’t sleep on Sydney. This city is sprawling with public artwork, from moving sculptures and digital installations to historical statues and guerilla art.

The Canopy by acclaimed urban Aboriginal artist Jacob Nash can be easily missed, so make sure you look up as you walk through the Pier St Underpass, the golden shapes and stream of blues and blacks is Nash’s ‘The Night Sky’ – an artwork imagining the sky before Captain Cook’s arrival in 1770, marking a poignant moment in Australian history.

Another gem is the heritage-listed Woodward Water Feature, a stunning downward spiralling water fountain, located in the forecourt of the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney. 10. Join a run club

If you’re a runner, Sydney is your kind of city. The TCS Sydney Marathon became the seventh World Marathon Major in 2025, so it’s safe to say running is in Sydney’s blood.

Plenty of scenic tracks are on offer for solo runners, but if you’re looking for community, Sydney has a thriving run club scene. Sydney Harbour Runners, Midnight Runners, and the Unofficial Run Club are all great places to start, and best of all, they’re free
.
