5 Best Ferry Trips In Sydney
How lucky we are to have the stunning Sydney Harbour – widely considered as one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world – at our doorstep. Fringed by ocean pools, harbour beaches and lush gardens, and some of the city’s most popular attractions like the Sydney Opera House, Taronga Zoo and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, it’s a must-see on any visit. And the best way to experience the harbour and all its beauty? Via ferry.
While the main ferry hub in Sydney is Circular Quay, there’s several connecting wharves in Darling Harbour and Pyrmont, including Pyrmont Wharf just opposite our hotel. Some of the best ferry routes depart from Pyrmont Wharf, getting you to hot spots like Luna Park, Manly and Balmain.
Here are our favourite routes and top spots you can reach by ferry, each offering its own unique slice of Sydney charm.
1. Discover new-meets-old Barangaroo
Looking for a mix of nature, culture, and a bit of retail therapy? A short ferry ride from Pyrmont Wharf will have you landing in Barangaroo, one of Sydney’s most exciting precincts. As you set sail, soak in the stunning views of Darling Harbour and the city skyline — perfect for those Instagram snaps. Once at Barangaroo, wander through the beautiful reserve, where greenery meets harbour views in the most spectacular way. Fancy a swim? Marrinawi Cove’s clear waters are calling. Afterward, stroll along the Barangaroo Art Trail or treat yourself to some high-end shopping before grabbing a bite at one of the fabulous waterfront eateries. It’s the ideal start to your day.
2. Explore the historic charm of Balmain
For a slice of local history and some laid-back vibes, Balmain is the place to be. Just hop on a ferry, and you’re there! Balmain is known for its village atmosphere and is home to the historic Dawn Fraser Baths, Australia’s oldest swimming pool. Cool off with a dip, then take a leisurely walk-through Elkington Park, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the harbour. And if you’re in the mood for a treasure hunt, the Rozelle Collectors Market is your go-to spot for antiques and unique finds. It’s the perfect way to spend a few relaxed hours soaking up the local charm.
3. Experience all the fun of Milsons Point
If you’re after a mix of fun and iconic Sydney views, Milsons Point won’t disappoint. Catch a ferry and step into the world of Luna Park, where the thrill of the rides is only matched by the breathtaking backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. But that’s not all — take a short walk to Lavender Bay and discover Wendy’s Secret Garden, a hidden gem that’s just as peaceful as it is picturesque. Milsons Point also offers some great spots for a quick coffee or snack, making it an ideal stop on your day out. One of our favourites is Lou Lou Boulangerie for a croissant and take away coffee.
4. Visit the heart of Sydney at Circular Quay
Circular Quay is the bustling aquatic heart of Sydney, and a must-visit for anyone exploring the city. Start with a guided tour of the world-famous Sydney Opera House — an absolute bucket-list experience. Then, unwind with a stroll through the Royal Botanic Garden, where lush landscapes meet stunning harbour views. Feeling adventurous? The Thunder Jet Boat ride is just the thing to get your adrenaline pumping. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
5. Unwind in Manly
For those looking to wind down after a day of exploring, Manly is your go-to destination. Hop on a ferry via Circular Quay, and enjoy some of the most scenic views Sydney has to offer as you cruise across the harbour. Once you arrive in Manly, the choices are endless — relax on the beautiful beach, explore the lively promenade lined with cafes and shops, or take a peaceful walk along the coastal paths, all while soaking in those stunning ocean views. It’s the perfect way to cap off your Sydney adventure.
GETTING AROUND
A hot tip from our hosts, you’ll need an Opal card to ride on a ferry in most instances. But some will accept payment via contactless credit or debit card.
