Sneak peek – our hotel is nearing completion!
Lockdown has lifted, international travel has been unlocked, summer is coming and our new hotel is just weeks away from completion. What a time to be alive! Take a sneak peek at the progress in the lead up to our opening in December.
We are literally counting down the days until we open our doors, ready to welcome you to Sydney’s newest boutique hotel, and everything is coming together fast.
We’re about to receive delivery of our super comfy Sleepmaker beds, the kitchen has just gone in behind our beautiful marble-topped bar in the ground floor lounge, and we’re trying not to get distracted by the sensational view from the freshly minted balconies in our The Balcony rooms.
The builders will be buzzing around for a few more weeks, putting the finishing touches on our 88-room hotel across eight storeys, including seven floors of guest rooms and our ground floor lobby, bar and cafe. And then after a big tidy up, we’ll be ready for you!
Just like The Block – only bigger
How nice it’s been to see our beautiful floorings go in, after months of walking on concrete slabs.
The custom-designed carpets are about to be carefully laid throughout the corridors and rooms, the beautiful black and white rubato marble tiles imported from Italy are now all set into the lobby floor, and our bathrooms are now wrapped floor to ceiling in oversized stone tiles.
And the walls are in too, layered in a mix of textural wallpaper and classic paint in soft hues. Stunning sliding fluted glass bathroom doors have been installed, inspired by the shapes of Pyrmont Bridge opposite the hotel. Plush royal blue velvet fluted bedheads are now up against the walls where Jess Le Clerc’s intricate hand-painted murals of banksia and more than 10,000 black wattle blooms explode with colour.
In the corridors, our custom-designed room numbers have been fitted featuring sketches of local flora by botanist Sir Joseph Banks.
On the ground floor in our lobby lounge, the incredible 200-piece Arboreal sculptural light by Yellow Goat Designs has just been suspended above the bar, taking hours to carefully install, with shimmering polished gold and silver discs which sway in the breeze to emulate filtered sunlight cast from leaves of the native Australian Eucalyptus tree. It’s the perfect complement to the intricate mesh steel clouds reminiscent of fishing nets hanging above the cafe-style dining area, tying the hotel to its Sydney Harbour-side location.
Old meets new
The interiors marry old and new, celebrating the industrial origins of our 1930s Art Deco-style building and of the surrounding area – both urban and natural – combined with modern furnishings and digital features.
You’ll find exposed heritage brickwork, original windows and a curved Art Deco facade, mixed with contemporary soft furnishings, Australian artworks and high quality bronze fittings, like Brodware tapware in the bathrooms.
And what you won’t find is all the latest technological and digital enhancements we’ve incorporated into the design and building, hidden out of sight behind the walls.
The interplay of the natural and industrial past of Pyrmont can be seen in the guest rooms, with warm tones and textures of wheats and woods, inspired by the building’s origin as cereal storage and the area’s long-gone local sugar and sandstone quarry industries, accented with splashes of colour from the vibrant wall murals of native local flora.
Space has been maximised in these compact rooms, with sliding doors, smart storage and soft curved joinery to create warm, snug, tonal retreats for our guests.
Also designed to be an inviting yet sophisticated sanctuary, the lobby lounge glows from the inside out, with floor-to-ceiling windows letting in natural light by day, and creating curiosity of what’s inside by night. Subtle lighting, plush furnishing from deep two-seater lounges to comfy armchairs, and smooth finishes come together to create a welcoming space for locals and wayfarers alike.

“The hotel has been three years in the making, so it’s very exciting to now be in the final stages of completion,” says the man behind the hotel, owner and avid traveller Nicolas Chen.
Nicolas set out to create a hotel designed for travellers by travellers, a refuge offering all the things you need in a hotel, and nothing you don’t.
In the coming weeks, the team, including General Manager Michael Sharp and Operations Manager Katharina Enzinger, will receive 88 Dyson Supersonic hairdryers, 400 fluffy pillows, 500 freshly-laundered towels, 700 L’Or coffee pods, 800 bottles of Australian craft beer, 600 locally-made Madhouse Bakehouse cookies, and more than 1000 litres of Rituals luxury bathroom amenities, ready to place in rooms and stock in Wayfarer’s Bar & Cafe.
