Walk one of the world’s oldest bridges
Just across from our hotel is one of the world’s oldest surviving electrically operated swing bridge, Pyrmont Bridge. Connecting Pyrmont to the CBD, Pyrmont Bridge is suspended above the sparkling blue water of Darling Harbour, today acting as a footbridge for pedestrians when it’s not open to allow access for vessels too tall to travel under the bridge. The current heritage listed swing bridge opened in 1902, carrying motor vehicle traffic across the harbour as the main route west out of Sydney up until 1981. This bridge replaced the original Pyrmont Bridge which began operating back in 1857. You can discover more about the history of the bridge and Sydney as a former industrial port city on The City of Sydney Port Pyrmont walking tour which begins at the Pyrmont Bridge.
